The benefits of regular cardiovascular exercise are known worldwide, but how do you know if you are exercising at the optimal intensity? Follow these tips from the experts at Life Fitness to know how your heart rates at all times.

Heart rate monitoring allows you to track your intensity levels and take the guess-work out of training. Exercising too hard can risk injury or burn out, but not working hard enough can be ineffective and leave you seeing little to no results. Whether you want to drop a few pounds, train for an event or gain body confidence, using a heart rate monitoring system will help you achieve your desired result without wasting time by being inefficient.

Tried-and-true pulse check. Place the index and middle fingers of one hand lightly on the carotid artery on your neck or radial artery on your wrist and count the number of beats for 10 seconds. Multiply this number by six to find your heart rate for one minute.

Heart rate monitor. Most heart rate devices include a chest strap and a wristwatch receiver that coincide to track your intensity levels during a workout. The chest strap picks up your beats per minute and displays it on the wrist receiver, making it simple to monitor your heart rate at a glance.

Cardio equipment system. Most treadmills allow you to wear a chest strap while the equipment displays your heart rate on the console conveniently in front of you. Other machines offer sensors that you can grip with your hands to transmit the reading directly to the console without the need of a strap.
