The University of Sheffield, named UK University of the Year in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards, and Life Fitness have completed an extensive refurbishment of the University’s fitness centre -S10health at Sport Sheffield’s, Goodwin Sports Centre. Following a swift refurbishment during the December vacation, the S10health fitness facility reopened last month and now boasts an impressive 170 pieces of state-of-the-art fitness equipment, making it one of the best facilities in the area.
Sport Sheffield is the University’s sport department dedicated to managing the University of Sheffield’s sport and fitness facilities and encouraging health and well-being at all levels, a mantra shared by Life Fitness. Sport Sheffield specifically chose Life Fitness as its fitness partner for the new facility not only for its innovative gym equipment, but also for their expertise in enhancing user experience as this directly complements the new vision and mission for Sport Sheffield. S10health has been a flagship facility for the last 10 years and this recent investment ensures it continues to be so for years to come.
The split level gym has undergone significant changes to its layout, utilising the Life Fitness Journey™ concept which strategically plans the floor design by deliberately creating destination zones so customers experience an exercise journey. With defined areas, such as a free weights and cardiovascular zone, which are signposted using screens, exercise barriers are eliminated as users are encouraged to progress from zone to zone.
At S10health, members now benefit from the very latest fitness equipment with the installation of the digitally advanced Life Fitness Elevation Engage cardio range, including Lifecycle exercise bikes featuring green Hybrid technology which automatically switches from electric to self-generated power when a user reaches a certain intensity level, lowering the energy consumption by more than 75%. The integrated LCD TV on the Engage product is the first-of-its-kind to utilise the power generated from a user’s work out.
The members can also take advantage of the Life Fitness Virtual Trainer™ - an online fitness tool which recommends programmes, tracks progress and share successes with the online community. Members can access Virtual Trainer on the Life Fitness equipment in the gymnasium as well as outside of the gym environment via a dedicated smartphone app.
Life Fitness further extended its service by working a couple of their Solutions Partners on this project. Building construction company Creatabilty, provided their services for the restructuring of the redesigned fitness suite and Weight Loss Guru, Pete Cohen, will be offering members an online weight loss programme focused on losing weight by following a simple, structured eight week programme that builds confidence and self-belief.
“We were looking for a fitness supplier that was as passionate about fitness as we are at Sport Sheffield, and focused on the things that matter – the equipment, innovation and the look and feel of the gym, and Life Fitness delivered this. They have an international track record that highlights their dedication to constantly developing better, more effective fitness equipment. They merge best practice from clubs around the world to create an exercise experience like no other, and Sport Sheffield is confident that existing and potential members will see and feel the difference.” Nick Wilson, Health & Fitness Development Manager, Sport Sheffield, University of Sheffield
