Phil Calvert, LFA Master Trainer

Phil Calvert is a master trainer for Life Fitness Academy providing a variety of educational and training services. He has more than 25 year’s experience in the sports and fitness industry.

Phil is a TPI expert and specialises in Golf strength and flexibility and holds Level 4 accreditations in exercise management for lower back pain, a diploma in Advanced Personal Training with nutrition and weight management, Level 3 in exercise referral. He also has several qualifications through the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

As well as his role as a Life Fitness Academy Master Trainer, Phil runs a successful personal training company (Fitness & Wellbeing Training Ltd) and has worked as a freelance personal trainer in Edinburgh presently within Edinburgh Leisure Gyms. Phil has also worked in Energy Fitness, Greens Health & Fitness and LA Fitness and as the fitness coach to Livingston Football Club (Scotland) before joining the Life Fitness Academy team.

Some of Phil’s personal sporting achievements include, cycling a 1100 mile charity cycle in 10 days, completing both Full and 70.3 Ironman, several Marathons including New York, Edinburgh and Belfast and competed in BNBF as a natural bodybuilder.

Phil graduated from Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland, with a bachelor’s degree. He was educated at Campbell college in Northern Ireland. In his rugby-playing days he was his university rugby captain whilst also selected to represent Scottish Colleges. Phil also played for the Wastonians Rugby Football Club in Edinburgh from 1990 to 1996 and now resides just outside of Edinburgh.

Along with certifications for lower back pain management, nutrition and weight loss, he holds certifications in advanced personal training and gym management.

Phil also offers expertise in sports-specific power training, flexibility and strength and endurance training. He has completed continuing professional development courses with TRX® Suspension Training, Power Plate and has qualifications in Group Cycling instructing and as a DNAFit trainer.

Phil offers expert education to assist fitness professionals an in-depth understanding of the products and how they can get the most out of equipment. His knowledge, understanding and passion of the industry offers an motivating learning experience for those he teaches.

Focus on your goals by braking them in to manageable blocks. Never be afraid to ask for help and remember every day is a day to learn something new.

What qualities do you believe an exercise professional requires to be successful in today’s industry?

Integrity, professionalism and continual learning and development, is key to be a successful exercise professional; if there is to be longevity in this industry.

How do you see the industry changing over the next few years?

I would advise new trainers to get a schooling in these gyms and look to small group training style classes. This will give you a visibility to spring board your business in the future. Small Group Training is the way to go!
